Proud of this Miss Teen Seattle contestant! She dug deep for courage and found her voice during her personal interview. Because it’s about SO much more than just being pretty, as a panel judge I asked character questions to get to the essence of these young ladies. ….. “What is one life challenge that you had to overcome to be here, right now…today?” She talked about her experience with domestic violence and what it took to become healthier and safe, gain some confidence and go back to school.
…Though she didn’t place in the competition, I had a chance to connect with her afterwards when all the gowns were being packed away. I told her I was proud of her, that SHE IS A WINNER, an amazing model for teens and all women who might also be experiencing DV. She gave voice to something that is real, yet is also so taboo to talk about.
That’s admirable. Just because we don’t talk about it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. As a matter of fact, more and more teen aged girls experience this at the hands of their boyfriends. …Nonetheless, because she found her courage she inspired me to find more of mine and in honor of her I declared to use more of my voice for the voiceless.
