Dress to Align Your Personal Brand from the Inside-Out

Once you’ve discovered your personal brand, the next step is to dress in alignment with your brand’s message from the inside-out.

…What’s in it for you as you invest your time, resources, and efforts?
The alignment between your fortified mindset, personal brand, and your appearance (brand packaging) is authentic, empowering, and attractive. You look and feel more confident, operate from your core strengths, values, and professional disciplines, perform better, increase your bottom line, and attract more of who and what you want in life… Don’t you want that? I sure do!

You are better able to consistently give your best to yourself and to others, your business, and your life, because you live out of an intentional mindset to live your authentic brand from the inside-out. The wardrobe and shoes that you literally step into on a daily basis? They are intentionally selected to translate your brand’s attributes into visual clues. They affirm the truth about your “inside” brand message and “outwardly” communicate clues to others; clues about your sense of confidence, values, creativity, personality, attitude and so much more.

• Do you have all the competence you need to be successful in your career, but lack confidence in your appearance?

• Do you feel that your brand “packaging” doesn’t accurately reflect your professional talents?

• Have you ever opted out of a business networking event or social due to having nothing to wear?

• Are you tired of wasting so much money on mistaken purchases and too much time getting dressed – just to walk out the door feeling like, “okay, this will do for now”?

Why are these questions important to ask? Besides the obvious, research indicates that our attitude (mindset) dictates our clothing choice, which then influences our behavior. If you are lacking confidence, feel like you don’t look like a reflection of you or what you bring to the table, or are frustrated with the time and money it takes to feel…mediocre, it’s affecting not only your clothing choices, but your behavior, and your bottom line.

If you knew that you could make minor changes which would lead to a paradigm shift in your attitude, so that you made better clothing choices, so that you performed better, would you? Have you considered the professional opportunities, or even the emotional, mental, or time ROI for getting aligned with your personal brand from the inside-out? The residual is daily – at a minimum.

Here are a few tips to support you in getting the business of “Dressing to Align Your Personal Brand from the Inside-Out” on course:

TIP: Discover your personal brand attributes and perhaps create a “Personal Brand Statement of Style”. (Please refer back to Uniquely Savvy’s first “Get Your Business on Course” blog entry for a refresher.)

TIP: To sharpen your visual brand, invest some time in purging your closet of pieces that don’t support your current personal brand attributes. For example: Perhaps a brand attribute is cutting edge, yet your “classic” suit is outdated. This would be a good category to try to salvage by adding a modern jacket or blouse, or if it still looks outdated – consider donating to an organization such as Dress for Success.

TIP: To communicate attention to detail, invest in having the right hem lengths, shortening sleeves when necessary, or having a nip in at the waist if necessary. Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight, too short, tattered, or soiled. It’s better to repeatedly wear a few pieces that strongly and accurately speak to “attention” to detail”, than to wear things that are ill fitting and misrepresent your ability to “look at the fine details” on your client’s project.

TIP: To communicate “Put Together”, dress to fit and flatter your unique shape. Learn your personal best practices: styles, colors, and fabrics that will serve you best. Shop your closet and the stores accordingly. The benefit? You get dressed with confidence and you simply get to focus on what you do best, not what you’re wearing!
