When I don’t know something, I seek to find the answer.  I don’t know about parenting, especially a boy, a 13 yr old boy.  Reading the book, “Bringing up Boys” by Dr. Dobson and my eyes have widened, my brows have raised, and my understanding has enriched (thus I have an increase in patience!).

….While at breakfast the other morning, after Kelly said good-bye and left for work, a young someone said quietly and confidently, “How does he leave out so quietly?”  “I want to be Kelly.”

It was in that moment I realized – boys do *intently*  watch their dads/ father figures…intently and will likely model after them – good or bad.

You see there is nothing extraordinary about wanting to be that guy who’s known for a quiet exit, but this + watching Kel come and go from work daily + experiencing Kelly teach him academics to produce results he’s not had before + seeing him hug, kiss and “share” w/me + being consistently on time + dining together + having family time + extending politeness + sharing silly humor + family prayer and more…..*all adds up*.

I’m aware of things yes, because I see them BUT also because Someone talks about them later on his own initiation.

“I want to be Kelly”, offered a teachable moment in that that Someone gets to “be his unique self”, yet I’m learning to listen more closely.  In that I’m given the gift of “knowing” Someone’s inner thoughts/longings and Someone gets to marinate on the attributes he admires about Kel’s character w/out interruption.

In reading this book I’m finding a framework around (a lot) of what we’re experiencing and I’m realizing the impact and just what a responsibility father figures (and adults) have on who our boys become.

I sense Someone feels #Championed on the *inside*because in behavior, school, demeanor there’s been big shifts on the *outside*!

Proud of both of these guys, I’m learning a lot and wanted to share!  XO
